# Understand Activities

# Understand Activities

Activities are used throughout Wingbase.

An Activity determines what is needed for a booking, what information is recorded when it is completed, and how that information is used for students, aircraft and reports.

## Bookings

The Activity determines what is needed when creating or editing a booking.

For example, a Flight Lesson can include a Student, Instructor and Aircraft, while Maintenance only needs an Aircraft.

Wingbase uses these Requirements to show the right fields for the booking and to check availability and conflicts for the Student, Instructor, Aircraft, Simulator or Room involved.

The Activities available also depend on what you are booking. For example, when creating a booking for an Aircraft, Wingbase shows Activities that require an Aircraft.

If you change the Activity on an existing booking, the booking updates to match the new Activity.

<Note>
  Information that does not apply to the new Activity is removed. Wingbase warns you first if training, Outcome or Flight Log information has already been recorded.

## Schedule

The Activity name and colour are used to identify the booking in the schedule.

Timing reserves additional time before or after a booking.

For example, a Flight Lesson from **14:00–15:00** with 30 minutes before and 15 minutes after reserves **13:30–15:15** in the schedule.

The booking itself remains **14:00–15:00**.

  Timing is saved when the booking is created. Changing an Activity's Timing later does not change existing bookings.
</Note>

## Completion

Activities affect the **Booking status**, **Completion status** and **Completions** in different ways.

When the **Booking status** is marked Completed, Wingbase shows Outcome and Flight Log where they apply. The Activity determines which fields are available in these sections.

The **Completion status** is shown as Complete or Incomplete. For an Activity that tracks progress, a missing Exercise can leave the booking Incomplete. Outcome and Flight Log fields can also leave it Incomplete when they are set to Required.

Wingbase shows a warning next to anything that still needs attention.

**Completions** shows past bookings that still have information missing. What is needed depends on the Activity.

For example, a Flight Lesson might need an Exercise, Flight Time or Meter Readings, while a Ground Lesson might need an Exercise or required Outcome information.

  A booking also needs to be marked Completed before it can be Complete. When it is marked Completed, Wingbase saves its Completion settings so later changes to the Activity do not change what was required for that booking.

## Students

Activities are used for the student's bookings and training record.

The student summary shows **Flight Time** and **Last Activity**, giving you a quick view of the student's flying time and most recent Activity.

Activities shows the student's past and upcoming bookings. This includes more than training, so a booking such as Aircraft Hire can appear here without contributing to Student Progress.

Activities with **Track Progress** turned on can contribute to Student Progress.

Depending on the training recorded, this can include:

* Exercises
* Performance
* Flight Time
* Dual Time
* Solo Time
* Tasks
* Events
* Exams

This allows different types of training to contribute to the same student training record.

Flight Time recorded for an Activity that does not track progress, such as Aircraft Hire, does not contribute to Student Progress.

## Aircraft

Activities involving an Aircraft can also update information for the aircraft.

When Meter Readings are recorded after a flight, a newer Tacho Stop updates the aircraft's current **Tacho Hours**.

Tacho Hours are shown in the aircraft summary and are also used for hour-based Tasks, including how many hours remain and whether a Task is due soon or overdue.

<Note>
  If Meter Readings are not recorded, Tacho Hours are not updated from that booking. Hour-based Tasks can therefore remain based on an older tacho reading.

## Reports

Activities are used to identify different types of bookings in reports.

**Activity Overview** groups bookings by Activity, while **Student Time**, **Instructor Time** and **Aircraft Usage** use the relevant information recorded for each booking.

Timing before and after a booking is used for scheduling and is not added to reported booking time.

Where a report uses Flight Time, Wingbase uses the Flight Time recorded for the booking.
